Meet vs. Yorktwon 1/15 (SENIOR NIGHT)

THURSDAY - PASTA DINNER
Dinner this week will be at the Edward’s, start time is 630pm. Please check email for address

Here is the link to sign up for something to bring this week. As a reminder, don’t forget to bring your own drink and a dessert to share (last week we barely had enough dessert to go around!).http://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090c4ea9a829a31-201516

FRIDAY – MEET vs. YKT at WL
**Friday is our last dress up day at school. Everyone, aside from our seniors, is expected to dress up. We’ll take a group photo at the pool after school before you change for senior night set up.

DIVERS – please coordinate with Kristen on your plans for after school (with some time to help set up, as needed)

SWIMMERS – please plan to stay after school to help with set up for senior night. Snacks will be provided (but suggest you also pack extra). As a reminder, everyone is expected to help pitch in with senior night preparations. You will want the same amount of effort put in when you are a senior, so please be an active teammate and make plans to be there. Its only one night a season that we ask for this extra time.

Diving will get underway by 630pm and swimming by 730pm, as usual.
Don’t forget something for your secret swimmer and be ready to cheeeeeeeeer for your teammates!

SWIM PARENT VOLUNTEERS – Parents, if you are officiating or timing at the swim meet please plan to arrive by 7pm or so. If you have any questions or can help out this week – please contact Tom Edwards (officials) or Strat Zervos (timers).

SENIOR NIGHT
Following the conclusion of our meet, we will hold our annual senior night activities. We will ask the team to stay at the pool for our formal presentation of gifts to our seniors. Parents are welcome to stay for our presentation – especially senior parents (don’t let your kids tell you otherwise!). ;)

Reminder: Zoe Edwards and Tom Salotti are collecting funds to help with the costs of decorations and snacks/food. Please be sure you get them your $5 this week.

Meet Vs. Hayfield 1/8

THURSDAY - PASTA DINNER
Dinner this week will again be at the Mowery’s house. Please see email for address.

Here is the link to sign up for something to bring this week. As a reminder, don’t forget to bring your own drink or something to share.http://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090c4ea9a829a31-201516

FRIDAY – MEET vs. Hayfield, start time 830pm
Please be at WL at 6:30pm – the bus will depart no later than 6:45pm to head over to the meet.

The pool is located at:
6601 Telegraph Road
Franconia, Virginia
We are the second swim meet of the night at this facility (this was the case last year for the Hayfield meet also, just to jog your memory on it works). Diving and swimming will occur concurrently at this meet, with the goal of starting at 830pm. This will be dependent on when the first meet concludes, but they move things along pretty quickly so there is a chance we could start earlier even. *I am waiting on additional information, if any, from the Hayfield coach and will send an update if needed.

PARENT VOLUNTEERS – Parents, if you are officiating/scoring the dive meet OR the swim meet please plan to arrive by 745pm or so. If you have any questions about what you are doing or you are able to volunteer and haven’t already mentioned it – please contact Tom Edwards (officials) or Strat Zervos (timers).

SENIOR NIGHT
Just a quick heads up about senior night. We will hold our annual senior night activities on January 15th – our last home meet (vs YKT). Following the conclusion of the meet, we ask the team to stay at the pool for our formal presentation of gifts to our seniors.

Typically the Junior class leads the efforts to plan for senior night – on that front, Zoe Edwards and Tom Salotti are collecting funds to help with the costs of decorations and whatnot ($5). Please also touch base with them to see how else you can help out on the day of – we expect it to be a team affair and you’ll want the same effort made for you when you’re a senior!

Also, there are a few folks who still owe me your original order gear money. Please get that in ASAP.

Starting this week, we will be using the Signup Genius for everyone to help contribute to dinners (you can sign up for ones in advance as well). Every swimmer will always be responsible for bringing their own drink (2 liters also welcome for sharing) to each dinner. We are still in need of pasta and garlic bread this week – here is the link to sign up!

Thursday Night Pasta Dinner 12/3

THURSDAY - PASTA DINNER
As a reminder, pasta dinners are expected for team participation. We will use this time to go over the lineup each week and spend some time together as a team. Similar to last year, we will be using the Signup Genius so that our dinners are more potluck style. However, that will start after this week. The Muggill family has graciously offered to cover everything for dinner this week! However, every swimmer will always be responsible for bringing their own drink (2 liters also welcome for sharing) to each dinner.

Here is the signup genius, however, so you can see what’s what from week to week. You can sign up now for future dinners if you know you are able to help.

Dinner this week begins at 6:30pm at Gail Muggill’s. Address is:
Horizon House Condominium (Community Room)
1300 Army Navy Drive
Arlington, VA 22202

Parking is available on Army Navy Dr. in front of the condominium, in Visitors Parking in front of the condominium (with guest pass obtained at the front desk), or around at the rear of the condominium on Nash St.

This dinner may be a bit longer than usual as we will be handing out gear (suits, tshirts, and caps) and also giving you your secret swimmer assignment.

SECRET SWIMMER
The WL Secret Swimmer program is a fun way to support your teammates. You will be assigned (at random) someone on the team who will be your ‘secret swimmer’ for the season. Boys will be assigned boys and girls will be assigned girls. For each meet, please bring something for your secret swimmer – we are not looking for major money to be spent, in fact we suggest posters, a note of encouragement, and perhaps a small snack. EVERYONE is required to participate – if you’re going to miss a meet, leave a note for your person with a friend to bring. If you don’t receive something, let Coach Dani know – this will likely also be tied to Varsity Letter requirements, so please ensure you are an active participant!

SATURDAY- Holiday Bazaar 12/5

SATURDAY – BAZAAR/FUNDRAISER

Everyone who is able should plan to be at the Holiday Bazaar at some point on Saturday, even for an  hour or two. Those who can work the morning shift, please arrive at 930am. If you are working another table during the Bazaar, try to stop by – even if for 30 min – to work with us as we sell our cookie jars. When the last jar is sold, we can leave. So if you are planning to arrive later in the afternoon, please check in with someone to see if we are still there. The Bazaar runs from 10-4pm. Parents, please stop by and support WL and the swim team. Our jars make great gifts for neighbors, teachers, and coworkers! Also, there were a lot of great vendors last year and you can find some cute holiday gifts for friends and family.

DRY LAND BEGINS TOMORROW

PRACTICES:

Our regular meet season and practices will only be held Monday-Thursday with swim meets on Fridays. In addition, we will add to our schedule our dryland training, which is every Monday and Wednesday from 430pm-530pm. That is mandatory as well. Dryland begins on Monday, November 30th.

DINNERS:
A long-standing tradition on our team is Thursday night pasta dinners. We will continue this tradition this year – dinners are mandatory. Its an opportunity for your kids to actually talk to one another and bond as a team. We will go over the lineup for the meet at the dinner as well. Our first pasta dinner will be on Thursday, December 3rd and our first meet is on Friday, December 4th at WL, with our double header to follow on Saturday, December 5th. More info coming on that too. We will be holding our Conference dinner on Wednesday night so the divers can attend. Aside from Thursday dinners, the kids also eat together after each meet (at Silver Diner in Clarendon). This is not required, but fun! The coaches attend so there is some adult supervision, however we are not responsible for getting them there or home.

GEAR:
All gear orders should be in by now. Please get your payment for gear to one of the coaches by December 2nd – checks should be made out to Washington-Lee. Also, please be sure you add $15 ON TOP of other costs to account for the cap and t-shirt that we bulk ordered in advance.

VOLUNTEERS:
Our season is not possible without the help of parent volunteers. We will need at least 12 timers every Friday night – if you are able/interested in timing, please contact Strat Zervos. He has graciously offered (or was coerced) to coordinate our timers. We have some of you signed up from the parent meeting. If we don’t have enough timers we will make some announcements before the meets start, or feel free to arrive early and let us know you’re available! If you are interested in being an official (stroke and turn, starter, etc), please contact Tom Edwards. He will be coordinating our officials. If it’s any incentive, the only parents allowed on deck during a meet are those who are timing or officiating.

FUNDRAISER:
Our team fundraiser is done at the annual WL Holiday Bazaar. Please plan to have your swimmer/diver participate in selling pre-made cookie mix jars on December 5th at WL. The bazaar is held from 10am – 4pm. Usually we sell out by around 1pm and head home. We will aim for that this year for sure so everyone can get some rest before our meet that night. Please plan to attend to work for at least one, two hour shift during the day. This is how we pay for senior gifts (which rock) and some other things throughout the year. Please support WL Swim and Dive! Our pre-made cookie mix makes great gifts for neighbors and coworkers.

Practice Starts Next Week

Regular Season Practice - Starts November 9th
Our regular season will begin on November 9th at 315pm. We WILL be getting in the pool, so please be prepared for that. You do not have school on November 11th because of the Federal Holiday (big thanks to all our Veterans!), but we WILL still have practice. I will get back to you on timing (we are hoping for a morning time slot) when it's confirmed.

If you do not yet have your physical completed and turned in to the trainer (not me), DO THAT IMMEDIATELY. You are not allowed to participate in any sport until that is completed. In addition to the physical form, there is a parent consent form as well. Be sure you sign that (it's usually what ends up missing or being over looked). If you do not have your physical in, you should still attend practice the first week, but you will not be allowed to swim.

Practice during the first week is required as part of our 'tryouts'. It's important that you attend so that we can capture roster information, discuss expectations and policies, arrange our lanes, etc. If you swim year round, I am requiring that you attend on Wednesday and at least one other day during the first week. Wednesday, since we have more time, will really be when we go over a lot of our team info/gear sizing/etc.

Finally, our requirements for club swimmers are that they attend one FULL practice with us each week to be eligible to swim in meets and be a member of our team. To clarify, that only applies if you swim full time with a club team (5 or more days a week). If you are only swimming once or twice with a club team, you should be at WL practice on the three other days. Other outside training, such as Crossfit or weights, does not 'count' for your training with us. Part of being on a team is being an active and involved member and we strive to encourage team unity among our members throughout the season.

As an extra note (which we will talk about during the first week also) - I know that our team is full of awesome over-achievers and multi-sport athletes. Please work out your schedules now, manage your time wisely, and make choices that will allow you to meet your commitments - for swim and otherwise. As an example, if you need to meet with a teacher, try to do that during the day or before school, don't rely on practice time for that.

Gear Orders - Due Nov 17th
If you know you will definitely be a member of the team this season and want to get a jump start on ordering gear – we have an online store where you can place your orders. I will be bulk ordering tshirts and caps (two required gear items – totaling $15 for both, $10 for tshirt and $5 for cap) in addition to anything else you order. We will confirm tshirt sizes the first week of practice. The only other required item is the team suit. Please ensure you order the size suit you want through the online store. They are Speedo POWERFLEX Eco suits. https://wlswimdive.itemorder.com

Coaches will still collect the money so that we can take advantage of the school’s tax exempt status.
All orders are due by November 17th.

Required Gear Totals:
Girls - $80
Boys, Brief - $55
Boys, Jammer - $60

Parents Meeting - November 16th @630pm
The annual winter sports parents meeting is November 16th. I strongly encourage you to attend this meeting whether you've been with us for four years or you're new. We have a lot of kids on the team and it's easier for us to answer everyone's questions together. Plus, we want to meet you, catch up, and ensure we have our volunteers lined up for the season! :)

Extras
If you want to host a pasta dinner, please let me know! They are held every Thursday before our meet days. We will be doing potluck style dinners again this year so if you can offer your house to host the team, you'll have lots of help on food!

Swim and Dive 2015-2016 Regular Season Information

The winter sports season will officially begin on November 9th.  You MUST have turned in your physical to participate, please complete your physicals as soon as possible and turn them into the athletic trainer.

Practices are held at W-L pool, Monday through Friday from 315pm - 430pm.

You are expected to attend at least FOUR practices a week before swim meets begin and THREE as week when we have swim meets scheduled.

Swim Meets are Friday nights (starting after Thanksgiving). Typically they run from about 5pm-10pm. We have an optional team dinner at Silver Diner after meets.

We hold practices over Winter Break for two hours. Everyone who is in town is expected to attend.

Team Information

  • We are a ‘cheering team’ – be ready to cheer for and support your teammates!
  • We have a ‘secret swimmer’ program that everyone is required to participate in.
  • Team dinners are held every Thursday before a swim meet.
  • We actively participate in the annual Holiday Bazaar fundraiser.
  • All practices, meets, and team events are required.

Other Info:

We have worked hard to build a dedicated and competitive team and expect that all swimmers and divers who choose to join the team are willing to be a full and active team member and give 100%.

We aim to have fun, but also provide a quality training and development program for team members.

Some of our most common feedback is that the swimmers and divers love being members of the team and the parents also feel that their kids have learned valuable lessons and were provided outstanding overall support from our program and coaching staff.

Parents:

We aren’t able to have a successful season without parent volunteers. Please let us know if you’re able to help out by timing, working the table, hosting a dinner, or officiating.
