There have been some updates to the status of our season this week... Looks like we're going to be swimming!

Additionally, pending weather, we will hold a conditioning session on Thursday at WL. We’ll meet at 330pm by the outdoor pool entrance. We will finish up around 430pm.

If it’s raining, no conditioning. If you have any symptoms of a cold or something else, do not attend.
Hope the weather holds and we can see you this week!

Week 8 - Districts

Team:

Just a quick update with District Info. If your name is on the district lineup, please continue to attend your required practices. The times after each event note the top 8th place time or top 16th place time at the championship meets from last year (just so you know what’s what).

Districts are at WL - prelims Friday, Finals (top 16 qualifiers from prelims) Saturday. We will enter only one relay in each relay event and I’ll let you know who’s swimming those this week.

Warmups usually start around 3pm and I will get you out of school a bit early on Friday. More info after coaches meeting Moday night!

Week 7

Team:

Girls – you put up a good fight! We only lost by TWO points last week against South Lakes. Great meet! Boys, sad to say we lost again, but you had some great swims and finishes too. Super proud of all of you and looking forward to seeing how we do at our last dual meet of the season!

Here is our schedule for the rest of the week – we have LOTS going on so please read everything.

FRIDAY – SCHOOL/AFTER SCHOOL

AT SCHOOL – we are expecting everyone to dress up in honor of our seniors. No sweats, yoga pants, pajamas, etc. Dress NICELY. We’ll take a team pic when everyone gets to the pool. Seniors, please wear your senior tshirts, which will be handed out at dinner on Thursday.

AFTER SCHOOL - EVERYONE is expected to stay after school to set up for senior night. Please be at the pool no later than 330pm – that gives you time to get your stuff together and head to the pool. We will have snacks available! Please bring your $5 if you have not already done so.

FRIDAY – MEET vs. Langley (@WL)

DIVERS: Please be ready to start diving warmups at 5pm. Before that you are expected to help set up the pool for senior night.

SWIMMERS: Be at the pool by 330pm for senior night set up.

SENIORS: Please arrive at 545pm, wearing your senior tshirts

*We are aiming to start our meets early like we have the last two weeks. We are waiting on confirmation from Langley that they can meet this timeline, but it’s looking good (and they will likely send divers early even if the whole team can’t be there till closer to 615pm).

Parents, if you are volunteering for dive please plan to arrive by 530pm or so. If you’re helping with swimming, please arrive around 630pm. Please sign up here if you are able to volunteer to time or officiate. SIGN UP HERE: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0b49a5a723a64-20182019

SENIOR NIGHT

Before we start the meet, we will ask our seniors to come out on the bulkhead for a short recognition – we will do the same for Langley seniors also. Following the conclusion of the meet, we will do our team senior send off.  Everyone is expected to stay after the meet concludes for this recognition. As part of this, the seniors will also ‘debut’ their video for the team. Parents are welcome to attend (don’t listen to your kids if they tell you otherwise).

SENIOR PARENTS: I am looking for one or two of you to help order pizzas to be delivered to the pool for our after meet dinner. In the past, senior parents have donated money for the pizza and anything not covered by donations we will reimburse from the team fund. Let me know if you’re able to help!

DISTRICTS – Jan 31/Feb 1 at WL

Following our meet on the 24th, only those swimmers who will be participating in Districts are expected to attend practice. The District lineup will be emailed out on Sunday, Jan 26th

Best,

Kristina

Week 4

Swimmers and Divers (and Parents) –

HAPPY NEW YEAR! I hope you all have been enjoying a relaxing break. We had a fun and spirited meet just before break against YKT - some great swims, best times, and lots of qualifiers for regions/states! Great work, Generals!

Here is the info for tomorrow's meet and next week.

FRIDAY - MEET vs. Lake Braddock at WL

DIVERS: Please  arrive by 445pm. Your warmup will begin at 5pm.

SWIMMERS: Please be at the pool by 545pm - diving will start at 6pm.

*We are starting about 30 min early this week since there is no school. Diving will start at 6pm, we will warmup during the last few rounds of diving and aim to start swimming around 7pm.

Since we do not have dinner tonight, I am attaching our lineup. If you see your name listed and you are not in town, please let me know ASAP. Aside from that or being sick (for those who have already told me) you're expected to be at the meet. I've tried to mix things up so in some cases (ahem, Brooke) people are swimming different events so we can get times. We aren't negotiating on events otherwise. :)

Parents, if you are volunteering for dive please plan to arrive by 545pm or so. Swim parents, pleas arrive by 630pm. Please sign up here if you are able to volunteer to time or officiate. SIGN UP HERE: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0b49a5a723a64-20182019

SENIOR NIGHT - Jan 24th

Save the date – our senior night will be held as part of our last home meet on January 24th. Week 3

Despite the long drive, the rain, and the hot pool conditions, the Generals had a great meet – both boys and girls WON! And a special thanks to the parents who made the drive, supported us on the swim and dive side, and patiently waited for the meet to start.

Here is our schedule for the rest of the week (and some other info):

THURSDAY - PASTA DINNER

This is our last dinner of 2019! IF you are interested, we are going to do a White Elephant gift exchange at dinner in celebration of the holiday season. Please bring an unmarked, wrapped gift to dinner if you’d like to join in on the fun! :)

FRIDAY – AT SCHOOL
We will have a 'white out' at school on Friday - please wear all white and tag our insta account when you take pics or share stories (@wlswim.dive).

FRIDAY - MEET vs. YKT at WL
DIVERS: Please coordinate with Coach Kristen on your arrival and warmup plans (you will be starting warm ups earlier than usual).
SWIMMERS: Please be at the pool by 6pm.

As always, this meet will be exciting and full of great racing against our hometown rival. It will be one of our toughest meets, but also the most fun and spirited! We will work to get as many people in the meet as possible, but not everyone may swim this week as we work to put in our most competitive lineup. That said, having our teammates on deck and cheering for everyone is equally as important as swimming. Everyone is excepted to be at this meet.

Diving will start at 630pm, we will warmup during the last few rounds of diving and aim to start swimming around 730pm. We have invited both WL and YKT Alumni as well as local Middle School swimmers to attend the meet and will do a short ‘welcome’ for them before we start the meet.

Parents, if you are volunteering for swim or dive please plan to arrive by 630pm or so. Please sign up here if you are able to volunteer to time or officiate. SIGN UP HERE: www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0b49a5a723a64-20182019

WINTER BREAK SCHEDULE
Practices over break will be from 3pm -430pm at WL on 12/23, 12/26, and 12/27. Then the following week we move to 930am-1130am on 12/30-31 and 1/2 at WL. If you are in town and not practicing full time elsewhere, you are expected to attend these practices.

REMINDER: We have a meet on January 3rd so staying in the water over break is key!

Girls, we’ll also start our tradition of no-shaving through Districts or wearing 'stockings' during practices.

GEAR STORE REOPEN
We had some requests to reopen the gear store - if you want any additional gear now that you've seen it in person (I am telling you...the sweatshirts and hockey jersey's are so cute!) please get your orders in by Friday. Any new orders will be delivered after winter break. LINK HERE:

Week 2

Congrats on a great, busy swim and dive team weekend! The boys snuck out a big WIN by just ONE point, girls lost – BUT both sides had some great and fun swims. Great job, everyone.

Thanks to everyone who helped out at the swim team table at the WL Bazaar (or in advance, making the jars) – we had some fun and sold out early as usual! Thanks so all our team parents who came by and bought some jars too.

Also, reminder, following on our team meeting on Thursday at dinner practices are mandatory. We will be enforcing our rule moving forward since practice attendance has been so light and taking attendance– if you aren’t at your required practices and don’t have an excused absence (sick or something that I’ve approved), you will not swim in meets going forward. On that note, if you are going to miss a meet, please let me know by Monday the week of.

Finally, quick note about weather – if after school activities are canceled we will NOT have practice; if you do not have school, we will NOT have practice. When it comes to meets, if Arlington County or Fairfax County schools are closed then that will likely mean our meet is going to be canceled/rescheduled. Otherwise, we are in the pool are regularly scheduled.

Here is our schedule for the rest of the week (practices are all regular schedule):

THURSDAY - TEAM PICTURE AT PRACTICE

Reminder, please wear your team suit to practice on Thursday for team pictures and please plan to be there.

THURSDAY - PASTA DINNER

As a reminder, pasta dinners are mandatory for team participation. From here on out dinners won’t run quite as late as last week because we don’t have as much to do, don’t worry!

Reminder, please bring your own drink (or something to share) and desserts to share as well.

FRIDAY – MEET vs. TC Williams @ Mt Vernon Rec (2017 Belle View Blvd. Alexandria, Virginia)

TEAM: Please meet at the WL pool at 530pm, we will leave by 545pm by bus. You are required to take the bus TO the meet, but you can leave with your parents at the end of the meet. Diving will be held first; followed by swim.

PARENTS: if you are volunteering to help with dive please plan to arrive by 6pm or so. If you are helping with swim, please plan to arrive by 645pm. If you have any questions about what you are doing or you are able to volunteer and haven’t already mentioned it – please contact Bill Mowery (officials) or Strat Zervos (timers). On that note, we had a tough time fielding our required official and timer/relay take off allotment at the meet last week. PLEASE let me know if you can help out in that capacity and PLEASE remember to sign up. We can’t have a meet without our parent volunteers. Thanks in advance!

ALUMNI  and MIDDLE SCHOOL VISIT MEET – 12/20 @WL

If you have friends or family members who were members of the WL Swim and Dive team or currently in middle school, please let them know that both WL and YKT will be inviting alumni and prospective middle school swimmers to attend our meet on 12/20 at WL. Should be a fun one!

Week 1

Now that we are in meet season, a few notes on dual meets. Similar to last year, you can expect our District to be challenging, but fun! We will continue our tradition of working towards allowing every member of our team to swim in every meet as best we can. Pending practice attendance and other factors, that may not always be the case. BUT we are committed to doing our best to honor that tradition. Also, as always, your events will reflect what our team need is for each meet. Sometimes we have more flexibility than others so we ask that you keep in mind our goal is to put together a comprehensive team lineup – not one that focuses on specific individuals/preferred events.

Few things before we get into logistics - as a reminder, I will aim to send out an email no later than Wednesday with the week schedule and information. Second, now that we are in meet season, three practices a week are mandatory unless you have a specific and agreed upon arrangement with me. If you aren't making those and/or aren't managing your time well, you may not be swimming in our meets. That said, communication with me is key so if you have a lot going on and need to chat – please do that in person and we’ll figure out something that works for both of us.

Here’s the run-down of the rest of the week’s schedule and requirements.

THURSDAY - PASTA DINNER

As a reminder, pasta dinners are expected for team participation and to earn a varsity letter at the end of the season. We will use this time to go over the lineup each week and spend some time together as a team. Similar to last year, we will be using the Signup Genius so that our dinners are more potluck style. However, every swimmer will always be responsible for bringing their own drink (2 liters also welcome for sharing) to each dinner.

FRIDAY – MEET vs. Herndon @ Herndon Community Center

(814 Ferndale Ave, Herndon, VA 20170)

SWIMMERS and DIVERS – please be at the pool by 530pm, in your team tshirt. We will plan to depart by bus around 545pm. Riding the bus is required on the way TO the meet. You are able to go home with your parents following the meet, but the bus will also bring us back to WL as well. (You cannot leave with anyone other than your parent.)

Diving and swimming happen concurrently during this meet – both warmups will get underway around 630pm with the meeting starting, by 7/715pm.

PARENTS: If you are officiating/scoring/timing the dive meet OR the swim meet, please plan to arrive by 630pm or so. If you have any questions about what you are doing or you are able to volunteer and haven’t already mentioned it – please contact Bill Mowery (officials) or Strat Zervos/Gretchen Mowery (timers). More info below.

You can sign up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0b49a5a723a64-20182019

*We are the home team for this meet (don’t ask) – so we will need a good crew of volunteers to be able to run the meet. Herndon is able to stand-in for some slots, but please sign up if you are able. And if you are new and able to officiate, please contact Bill Mowery.

SATURDAY – BAZAAR/FUNDRAISER

First up, a HUGE thank you to those of you who put together our cookie jars this year and to Brooke for leading the charge (and thanks to the Weiser family for housing the jars/hosting the put-together!). :)

Everyone who is able should plan to be at the Holiday Bazaar at some point on Saturday, even for an  hour or two. Those who can work the morning shift, please arrive at 930am. If you are working another table during the Bazaar, try to stop by – even if for 30 min – to work with us as we sell our cookie jars. When the last jar is sold, we can leave. So if you are planning to arrive later in the afternoon, please check in with someone to see if we are still there. The Bazaar runs from 10-4pm, but we usually finish up by 1pm or so.

Parents, please stop by and support WL and the swim team. Our jars make great gifts for neighbors, teachers, and coworkers! Also, there were a lot of great vendors last year and you can find some cute holiday gifts for friends and family. We will sell them for $10 or two for $15. Discounts offered on purchases of 2 or more!

EXTRAS

We are not having picture day this week like other winter sports teams – our date will be in December 12th during regular practice time.

If you have any questions, let me know. Otherwise, see you at practice this week!

Best,

Coach Kristina

2019 - 2020 Swim and Dive Season Information

FIRST WEEK

The winter sports season will officially begin on Tuesday, November 12th at 3:15pm (please meet at the pool). Practice is mandatory and we will swim, so be prepared with caps, googles and appropriate competitive gear.

You MUST have turned in your physical to participate, please complete your physicals as soon as possible and turn them into the athletic trainer.

Team Information

Practices are held at W-L pool, Monday through Friday from 3:15pm - 4:30pm.

You are expected to attend at least FOUR practices a week before swim meets begin and THREE per week when we have swim meets scheduled.

As always, our requirements for club swimmers are that they attend one FULL practice with us each week to be eligible to swim in meets and be a member of our team. To clarify, that only applies if you swim full time with a club team (5 or more days a week). If you are only swimming once or twice per week with a club team, you should be at WL practice on the other three other days. Other outside training, such as CrossFit or weights, does not 'count' for your training with us. Part of being on a team is being an active and involved member and we strive to encourage team unity among our members throughout the season.

Swim Meets are Friday nights (starting after Thanksgiving). Typically they run from about 5pm-10pm. We have an optional team dinner at Silver Diner after meets.

We hold practices over Winter Break for two hours. Everyone who is in town is expected to attend.

We have worked hard to build a dedicated and competitive team and expect that all swimmers and divers who choose to join the team are willing to be a full and active team member and give 100%.
